Missing my usual meditation group, desperate for the group meditation experience, I attended a Meetup at a Buddhist temple. Upon arrival to the stately home, I followed a long well-maintained, well-lit, and beautiful path to an open back door! Shocked, I entered and followed the sound of voices through the narrow hallway to a large open room, finding people who were obviously acquainted. I listened, watched, and noticed that one individual was constantly complaining and ran on the tense side. At the appointed time we snaked through another long, winding maze, then up 2 flights of narrow, but exquisitely clean and well-maintained stairs. The entrance to my own group’s meditation meeting was through a dark, narrow walkway in an alley, to an imposing blank door, then down some shadowy, slightly creaky stairs. Same idea, but I guess it’s all in the execution. They decided amongst themselves who would lead the meditation, and I felt a strong sense of calm. This person had been doing the work to calm the overly anxious complaining individual. He used his voice and some breathing exercises to bring us all to a state of quiet where, closing the eyes, and letting the darkness swallow me was the most natural, easiest thing in the world. Upon completion of the meditation, I was in a profound state of joy, gratitude and humility. As I watched the others emerge from their places of darkness, I could see on their serene faces that they had had similar experiences. I paid particular attention to the chronic complainer who now emoted gratitude and graciousness. Her face was relaxed, and joy shone from her eyes. The law is the law is the law. The peaceful, grateful, deep, joy found in deep meditation happens no matter who, no matter where.
